How to Receive a Free Credit Report

There has been a recent change in legislation that means that all US citizens are entitled to receive a free credit report each year. Many people are wondering how to get them. These free credit reports are available by written request or online.

To receive a free credit report in the mail, just send a written request for each of the three major credit reporting agencies. These agencies are Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. This may take up to 6 weeks for the reports to arrive back.

Once the company receives your written request, your request goes in a queue and then they will mail a copy of the report to the address you entered in the query. This is obviously too long if you have an imminent major purchase to make.

Another option that will be a quicker way to get your free credit report is online. Once on the Internet you can use a search engine, such as Google and type in the keyword free credit report. This search will bring up many sites. Most sites will give you a free credit report in their agreement to try their credit monitoring services free for one month.

Once this month is over, you will have to start paying the monthly fee for them to continue to monitor your credit report. If you want to get your credit report through one of these companies and do not wish to continue their services, make sure that you cancel your subscription to their service before the end of the 30 days to make sure you're not billed.

You can also go to www.annualcreditreport.com to get your free credit report. Once you enter some personal information and verify your identity, this website allows you to view your free credit report from all three agencies.

This is a trustworthy website that was set up as a joint venture between the credit reference agencies to make it easier for customers to check their credit report.

If you are reading your free credit report online, make sure to print a copy of each report and put them in a safe place for future use.
