If you are looking to fix a credit report, then you will need patience, perseverance and a plan. Although there are numerous companies that claim that they can help you improve your credit score, it is something that you can do yourself. You just need to follow these 3 basic steps.

1. The first step to fix a credit report is to get a copy of your credit files from all three credit reporting agencies. They are TransUnion, Equifax and Experian. You can chose to carry this out online, or make a request in writing. This will give you access to all of your credit information. It will show the loans that you have taken out and credit card details. If you have a mortgage it will also be present.

2. You now need to go through this information with a fine toothcomb looking for errors. These errors maybe due to clerical errors made by staff. They could also be due to identity theft. A person may have tried to obtain credit in your name. Identity theft is often carried out by criminals who leave a string of debts behind them. Report any errors immediately to the credit reference agency and your creditor. You should make sure that everything is put in writing, in case you need to refer back to it.

3. If there are any outstanding loans or delinquencies on your credit report that are genuine, then take steps to pay these back. This is one of the most important ways to fix the credit report. When all of your credit arrangements is back in order you will start to see your credit score improve. It takes time because a previous instance of poor credit management is not immediately erased from your file. But over time your credit report will be improved.
