How To Get Your Free Government Credit Report
Under recent legislation it is now the right of US citizens to be able to get a copy of their credit report for free on an annual basis. The law this is under is called the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). Because this is a legal requirement, some people refer to it as getting their free government credit report.
The legislation allows a person can obtain free credit report from each of the three credit reporting agencies once a year. The three credit agencies are Experian, Equifax and TransUnion.
For a person to get their copy of a free credit report, they should simply ask for it in one of two ways. They can send a written request to each agency or thy can register at the website annualcreditreport.com. This site was set up by the 3 credit reference agencies to provide a convenient central point to administer requests for a free government credit report.
In order to better remember what time of year to get your free credit report, it is recommended that you request it on the memorable dates. You could maybe use your own birthday or the first or the last day of the year. Once you select a day, make a note to yourself on the calendar when you should check it again.
Once you have got your free government credit report, carefully go through it to see if there are any entries that should not be there. For instance are there any credit cards that have been taken out without your knowledge. Or are there debts on there that have already been settled. This will allow you to track fraudulent entries on your report and better equip you to fight the growing crime of identity theft.
